I should be reading Morte Darthur for Medieval lit., but...can you guess what I'm doing instead? If you guessed "procrastinating," you are correct and win a proverbial pat on the back.

How to spot Jess in a crowd:
Look for a rather tall gal, probably wearing khaki and light, bright colors. This is the springtime Jess. She will have a thoughtful look on her face, because she is usually in her own world when walking through a crowd.

The nature of Jess:
Her nature is difficult to decipher. Most of the time she is very easygoing -- almost too much so. She is on the quiet side, especially in groups, but this does not mean she does not wish to participate. In fact, she is inwardly involved in all she sees and hears; she simply doesn't put thoughts to words unless it seems appropriate or welcomed. She greatly values peaceful, loving relationships and will strive to maintain friendships.

The real Jess:
Perhaps her brother, Michael, could give a more accurate view on this query. However, he is not present at the moment, so your author will attempt to explain the Real Jess. She is generally much spunkier and more opinionated than the Quiet Jess that appears on the surface. The Real Jess only reveals herself to close friends and family whom she knows will love her despite her imperfections.

Common reactions to Jess:

"You're so quiet" or "You never say much."

"So, you want to be an English teacher?" (Real Jess's vehement reply: "Absolutely not!")

"You seem so organized." (it's merely a convincing illusion)

"What did you say?" (because Jess's voice was too soft/low)

How to scare Jess:
Large, hairy spiders will do the trick.

How to get Jess to smile:
Say something witty, tell her you love her, give her a dessert.

How to get Jess to laugh:
Again, say something witty or tell a particularly hilarious joke. Jess likes to laugh, and it's not hard to get her to do so.

What makes Jess mad:
Sin and all its ramifications. Injustice. False accusations about those she cares about or highly respects.

What makes Jess happy:
Her relationship with Jesus Christ and the joy that love brings. Seeing her friends also makes Jess very happy.

What motivates Jess:
Deadlines motivate Jess more than anything else, it seems. Sucess at an endeavor also inspires her to keep at it. She finds it difficult to stay motivated in situations where she can't see the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel," but she understands that blind faith is a necessary lesson to learn in life.

What makes Jess stumble:
Spiritually? Jess is ashamedly subject to temptations just like everyone else. It depends on what she is struggling with at the time, but discontent is one of her biggest battles.

How to meet Jess :
If you hang around the campus of her university, you are likely to meet Jess...eventually. (What can I say? It's a big school.) Otherwise, you can visit her at home, as long as you're not afraid of a large but sweet dog. When meeting Jess for the first time, it is important to note that she might not initially say much. Please do not assume she is disinterested or stand-offish, as she is not. It is just lingering shyness, which will soon be overcome as you converse further with her. She loves to get to know people, valuing friendships over acquaintanceships.
