Hey friends,

I am wanting to change my public blog from Xanga to something else... I've decided that I just don't like Xanga. I'm looking for something cleaner and more professional looking. Any suggestions? What's better -- blogspot? Wordpress? Something else? Please drop a comment if you have any suggestions or input. (Also, if you are gifted in graphic design and enjoy it, I would love to have you design my layout once I get the new blog account. I'd love something with a brown/sage green/soothing earth tones theme. Kind of artsy. But I am not at all gifted in that area.)

Many thanks in advance!

If you're looking for something clean and customisable, I'd definitely recommend blogspot. With blogger beta, they've introduced a few new features that weren't previously available. It's easy to use and you can work with their (customisable) templates or completely build your own.

I love blogspot for public/serious blogging. It's not quite as good for actually "connecting" but public blogs are meant more for news, anyway. :)

Haven't learned to customize blogger very extensively yet, though.

I use blogspot as a public journal for my family to read, and it's really good and easy to use. :)

Blogspot is pretty nice. I'm not all that knowledgeable about HTML and web design, but it allowed me to personalize my blog as much as I knew how. :)

Oh, would you? :) I've had the same LJ layout forever, so if you'd like to change it I'd love that. I can e-mail you my login info.

BTW, I wrote you a letter (finally!) yesterday and will send it ASAP.

I don't have much experience with other blogs but I like what I've seen on Wordpress.

I like Blogspot... And definitely don't care for Xanga or MySpace.

Hi Jessica,

A couple of comments:

Maybe it's just being in a no-where part of the world (nothing to the East between here and Europe but empty northern Canada and the Stormyyy Atlantic and nothing to the West between here and Asia but the Placid (Ha Ha) Pacific) but blogspot always seems slow to load, or I have to try more than once to bring pages up. I have no problem with LJ in those regards or a zillion other websites so I think their systemm may be overloaded. For me it acts like LJ did three or four years ago before they added all the servers.

I use WordPress on my web site but haven't used wordpress.com so I don't know how "user-friendly" their sysyem is to do customization. I know with it on my own site I have to edit php files to make many types of changes so I rarely fiddle with it. There are numerous pre-made templates that are available to use with WordPress.
